![]() VVVVVV looks and sounds retro, but Cavanagh’s willingness to take a premise to the extreme underscores the relentless drive of a modern artist rather any cliched attachment to nostalgic pleasure. Later in the game, Cavanagh takes away platforms altogether for a few challenges to achieve an even stronger sense of nerve-wracking vulnerability and physics-defying adventure. ![]() The best segment of the game highlights the excitement of moving from one screen to the next: to nab one item, you must twice guide the hero through a treacherous series of tunnels with spikes as he’s pulled in midair for several successive screens. Although VVVVVV wasn’t the first game to feature this concept (see the Mega Man series or, for a less well-known example, 1986’s Terminus), it commits to the idea like no other title. With the press of a button, the protagonist of Terry Cavanagh’s VVVVVV quickly floats to either the ceiling or the floor via gravity. Note: You can read the introduction to this list here. This stunning interpretation of Donkey Kong as a limitless well of dynamic action is also an audiovisual home run, with sound effects that pay homage to the arcade classic, an urgent soundtrack that ranks among the best on the Game Boy, and cinematics that amusingly reimagine Mario’s neverending pursuit of the titular antagonist. Without a tutorial sucking the creative spirit out of the whole affair, you’ll learn how to create temporary ladders and bridges, ride on the heads of harmless enemies to reach higher ground, take advantage of a highly athletic moveset (a clear inspiration for the acrobatics of Super Mario 64), and more as you identify and then carry a key to open the door to the next stage. The best remake in video-game history, this Game Boy masterpiece opens with the four levels of 1981’s Donkey Kong before sending the player, as Mario, on an indisputably epic quest. (For more on the greatness of Mega Man 3, read my essay here.) The game’s kinetic flare makes it hard not to feel propelled through its gauntlet of outstanding villains, from Snake Man to Gemini Man to Top Man. This game’s silky smooth run-and-jump action, a revelation after the slippery play of the first two Mega Man games, is accompanied by faster screen-to-screen transitions and a now-legendary move, the slide, that redefined how the blue hero can travel and react to threats. And pay attention to the game’s underrated satirical undercurrent, where the protagonist’s greed and treachery - the damsel in distress, who is wryly labeled a villain in an in-game notebook, can literally be used as an object - are almost always rewarded with death.Īn honorable mention in my 15 greatest shooters list, Mega Man 3 fully realizes the potential of its predecessors. The fundamentals of this game - the climbing and hanging, the running and jumping, the throwing and dropping - are fine-tuned to an absurd degree, and Yu’s level design strikes an impeccable balance between randomness and familiarity. I’d like to meet someone who has stopped discovering tricks and quirks in Derek Yu’s Spelunky HD. ![]() As a game where you can casually advance through its levels or dive deep into its hidden areas through fun uses of the hero’s many powers, Kirby’s Adventure has flexible appeal and is one of the greatest technical achievements of the 8-bit era. director Masahiro Sakurai - is more driven by the freedom to fly, and Kirby’s copycat ability both complements the established formula of 1992’s Kirby’s Dream Land and predicts the surreal, morally dubious nature of Super Mario Odyssey. This Nintendo classic - which has the fingerprints of the late and great Satoru Iwata, in addition to those of long-time Kirby and Super Smash Bros. Kirby’s Adventure doesn’t exactly conform to the standard notion that platforming should involve a distinguished approach to jumping. The newest game on this list, Downwell shows that Fumoto is a brilliant independent artist who should get more attention from the gaming press (which is too obsessed with, among other things, the randomly generated sci-fi banalities of No Man’s Sky). In Downwell, you can safely bop certain enemies but get injured by touching others, and it’s this concern that gives this pacey game its fundamental tension as you try to rack up combos or merely survive through the greatest fall in video-game history. Some might define Downwell as a shooter, but developer Ojiro Fumoto ingeniously riffs on one of the platformer’s most common features: the ability to dispatch an enemy by bopping them on top of the head. Ditto for all that talk of "political solutions" and "diplomatic solutions" and "dialogue" we heard about in Syria. for the inevitable Russian veto. As Steven Lee Meyers, Moscow correspondent for the New York Times, pointed out, Russia does not seem to even remember that the institution exists today. or Europe want to do anything on the world stage, Russia pipes up, demanding the issue be taken to the U.N. Putin's Kremlin is dark and scary, and, ultimately, very boring. To a large extent, Putin really believes that he is the one man standing between Russia and the yawning void. They truly believe that there is an American conspiracy afoot to topple Putin, that Russian liberals are traitors corrupted by and loyal to the West, they truly believe that, should free and fair elections be held in Russia, their countrymen would elect bloodthirsty fascists, rather than democratic liberals. And you know why being a pessimist is the best way to predict outcomes in Russia? Because Putin and those around him are, fundamentally, terminal pessimists. There's rumbling in the Crimea, will Putin take advantage and take the Crimean peninsula? You betcha. ![]() There are protests in the streets of Moscow. Will Vladimir Putin allow the ostensibly liberal Dmitry Medvedev to have a second term? Not a chance. ![]() Unfortunately, all you really need to do to seem clairvoyant about the place is to be an utter pessimist. Pessimism always wins. One of the reasons I left my correspondent's post in Moscow was because Russia, despite all the foam on the water, is ultimately a very boring place. Trying to harness Russia with our own logic just makes us miss Putin's next steps. And it will gather whatever spurious reasons it needs to insulate itself territorially from what it still perceives to be a large and growing NATO threat. Russia, or, more accurately, Putin, sees the world according to his own logic, and the logic goes like this: it is better to be feared than loved, it is better to be overly strong than to risk appearing weak, and Russia was, is, and will be an empire with an eternal appetite for expansion. It is often predicated on wholly Western logic: surely, Russia won't invade because war is costly and the Russian economy isn't doing well and surely Putin doesn't want another hit to an already weak ruble because Russia doesn't need to conquer Crimea if Crimea is going to secede on its own Russia will not want to risk the geopolitical isolation, and " what's really in it for Russia?"-stop. We didn't think Putin would do this. Why, exactly? This has often puzzled me about Western analysis of Russia. And when such an opportunity presents itself, one would be foolish not to take it, especially if one's name is Vladimir Putin. It was a small rumbling, but just big enough for Russia to exploit. As soon as the revolution in Kiev happened, there was an unhappy rumbling in the Crimea, which has a large Russian population and is home to the Russian Black Sea Fleet. The situation in Kiev-in which people representing one half of the country (the Ukrainian-speaking west) took power to some extent at the expense of the Russian-speaking east-created the perfect opportunity for Moscow to divide and conquer. The situation is changing rapidly, but here are some initial thoughts. Vladimir Putin has asked the Federation Council-the upper chamber of Russia's dummy parliament-to authorize the use of force not just in Crimea, but "on Ukraine's territory until the socio-political situation is normalized." And though American spies and the Washington Post categorically ruled this out just days ago, this was not entirely unexpected. ![]() ![]() Dagostino, 27, Richville, was charged by state police at 1:30 p.m. He is summoned to appear in Palermo Town Court at a later date. ![]() ![]() Disappointingly, King of Dragons is essentially an earlier version of Knights of the Round with more character classes and an easier go of things. It's mildly challenging and has a couple of neat enemies and stages that make it worth a look. The result of a "Design your own game" contest in Japan from way back when, Eco Fighters is a horizontal shooter with a twist - players take control of powered roller-ball circling their ship in addition to their traditional gunfire. Unexpectedly, Eco Fighters is still a lot of fun too. It's definitely uncomplicated and somewhat cheesy compared to today's crop of sword-wielders, but for a quick fix "on the go" it does its job well. Similar to King of Dragons in that it's a side-scrolling hack 'n slasher, Knights was one of the earliest arcade actioners we can remember that used experience points to upgrade your characters. Of the three new additions, Knights of the Round still holds up best. Luckily there are three PSP-Exclusive games that take those missing titles' places: Knights of the Round, the King of Dragons, and Eco Fighters. Another thing to take note of is that if you enjoyed the original PS2 version and want to pick this up to relive Final Fight, Forgotten Worlds, Bionic Commando, Trojan or Section Z, then you should look backwards - four of those games were dropped since they appeared in "Remixed," while Trojan has disappeared entirely. Unfortunately, Volgus and Son Son are only moderately exciting additions to the anthology. Oh, and whatever you do, don't overlook the surprise of the bunch in Exed Exes (you know it better as Attack of the Savage Bees) - it's a terrific little Gaplus rip-off with better graphics and some neat variations on the typical wave shooter. Ghosts 'N Goblins, Ghouls 'N Ghosts, and Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts are great, while Gun Smoke, Commando and Mercs kick all kinds of double-barreled ass. The rest of the collection is no pushover either. Let's also not forget that the world-renowned Street Fighter II series speaks for itself, and Ryu and Ken fans should be happy to note that both SFII Champion Edition and the always-killer Hyper Fighting join the original Street Fighter II for triple the Hadoken fun. 1942, 1943, and 1943 Kai are all considered legends in the arcade shooter market and the heavily-Japanese Pirate Ship Higemaru is an addictive homage to the SEGA puzzler Pengo. ![]() But what about those games anyway? Best known to recent players for his contributions to Devil May Cry, Resident Evil and Genji, Okamoto had an equally important role in titles such as Street Fighter, Final Fight, and 1942. Should be spacious as compared to Tiago.Safety: At least 2 airbags, ABS, should have at least 3/4 star safety rating.I narrowed down my choices and the requirements were very dead clear in my mind which were as follows: And I extended my search from Moradabad to Delhi NCR, Ambala, Chandigarh, Lucknow where I could easily get the car transfer to my name. So, I started looking for used cars everywhere I could like carwale, Olx, Spinny, Cars24 etc. The cheapest option in diesel you can get is Tata Altroz XE Plus for 9.33 lakhs and I didn’t want to get another Tata as I was not happy with the ASS and frankly, I am done with Tata for good. There is no option available in the market for a diesel car in that range. But to my surprise, I couldn’t find a single diesel car under 10 lakhs let alone the automatic part. One evening I just casually opened Carwale and started searching for a diesel car with automatic transmission under 10 lakh rupees (my max Budget for a new car) as I didn’t want to take any loan since we are planning for another car which is definitely going to cost upwards of 25 lakhs. So, I was open to both New and Pre-Owned cars. Now this car had to be an upgrade over the Tiago and not XUV because we are planning to get an SUV, I know for sure but just don’t know when that might happen, maybe end of this year or might be sometime next year. One thing was sure that the car has to be diesel and should be automatic as I feel I am done driving manual considering the traffic conditions in my city and Delhi NCR as I travel a lot to NCR. Now talking about my current usage, I have a good amount of highway usage as well as city driving. ![]() So, the most difficult question hit me once that bug hit my mind “WHICH CAR”. ![]() Rest I’ll be updating my ownership thread regarding Tiago. So, all this added and I thought of replacing my car. I was never pleased with the TASS from the beginning. Now the AC also started acting up and the 70K service was also on the edge. So in all, I had spent 20K in repairs in just 8 days. Then after one week the left axle went kaput and it cost me approx. First, the Engine mount in my Tiago went Kaput which I got fixed from the TASS for Rs. One year passed and we somehow managed with Tiago as I got too busy with my business and other stuff but recently in the last month couple of incidents happened which made me take this quick decision which was pending anyways. Now we were only left with one car in the garage, our 2017 Tata Tiago XZ Diesel. So, I put an Ad on Olx and got a good deal for my XUV and our long-term relationship finally ended in March 2022. ![]() So when we decided to let our beloved XUV go I approached a couple of dealers to get a price for my XUV including franchises like Car24, Olx etc but all of them gave me a price hovering near 2.5 Lacs only as the car was about to complete its 10 years in October. But I had to let her go because of the 10-year rule in NCR since I travel a lot to Delhi NCR from Moradabad. It was a gem of a vehicle and I really miss her. It had clocked almost 150,000 kms and still ran like a new car. Well, the hunt for a new car started back in 2022 when I sold my XUV 500 W8 bought back in 2012.
